Successions

Succession allows someone to take over your tenancy when you die. If you have a joint tenancy and one partner dies, the tenancy continues for the other tenant. Where the tenant (or remaining joint tenant) dies, a spouse, partner, close relative or carer (as defined in your Tenancy Agreement) can take over your tenancy, if:

  • they were living in the property as their permanent residency at the time (co-habitees must have lived with you continuously for at least 6 months before your death);
  • they are over 16 years of age;
  • in the case of carers, he/she must have also given up their previous home before your death to care for you or a member of your family.

Normally, the tenancy can only be inherited twice and the third death will normally end the tenancy unless there is a surviving joint tenant. We will review each case on an individual basis. For more information please contact the Housing Management staff at the office.
